Edirne has been inhabited since 5500 BC. but not a significant city. The first appearence of Edirne as an important city is around 120s AD during the reign of Roman Emperor Hadrian. And after the split of Roman Empire in 395, Hadrianapolis was one of the provinces of Eastern Roman Empire, Byzantine Empire as we know today.

In 1189 and 1261 the city was invaded by the Crusader armies but reconquered by the Eastern Romans and finally in 1361 conquered by the Ottomans and since then it has been a Turkish city. And From 1361 to 1453 was the capital of the Ottoman Empire. And Today you can see some beautiful examples of Ottoman architecture.
